UPDATE: 6/1/09

Fifth grade students at Orange Beach Elementary School beat out 3,000 other student teams, including high school students, to win the Alabama Stock Market Game Grand Championship. Competing in the Lower Division of the South Region of the Alabama Stock Market Game, the team of Daniel Adams and Kaylen Bowdoin finished in first place for the Spring Session. Starting with $100,000 in the virtual stock market, the team bought and sold stocks for ten weeks ending with a total portfolio value of $157,464.
That ending balance also earned the pair the Grand Championship prize for the 2008-09 school year. Representative Steve McMillan and Senator Trip Pittman awarded the cash prize of $500 to the students Thursday, May 21 at an all school ceremony. The fifth grade students study under Amy Edwards.
Students began with $100,000 and purchased stocks and mutual funds and made any number of trades with their available funds. Teams competed in real time with real costs on the same computer system that operates the NYSE. The teams with the most valuable portfolios at the end of the 10 weeks win their competitive division. Teachers and students also won prizes in online drawings throughout the ten weeks. The Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts, McWane Science Center, Birmingham, and Surfside Water Park, Auburn, donated prizes.
"The Sidney Lanier team and the other winners impressed us with their ability to buy and sell at just the right time-not an easy thing to do in this volatile market," commented ACEE Executive Director Steve Rapp.
Guidance Counselor Fran Drake's and Orange Beach Elementary sixth graders presented their "jobs" to the school at Career Day on Tuesday, May 19. Students came to class dressed in clothes associated with their chosen career, including sports professionals, doctors and veterinarians.
