Library Book Donations

Reading is the key to personal growth and a cornerstone of education; therefore, it is my personal belief that the school library is the HEART of each school. This must be a part of the school that is inviting and intellectually stimulating, the hub of learning, the nucleus of knowledge.  As you can see from the picture above, our Middle School and High School Libraries, however, are nearly bare with empty shelves and outdated materials. As President of the Middle School PTSO last year, we purchased over 300 books and Accelerated Reader tests for our Middle School Library. These were books that the children and teachers personally requested and were interested in reading. Recently, David and I worked closely with the Gulf Shores City Library to donate over 1000 books to our schools.

Each year, the Gulf Shores Library has a book sale.  We contacted the Library and asked if they would consider donating the remainder of the books to our Gulf Shores and Orange Beach schools.  To our amazement, we found that the remainder of the books were promised to Summerdale Middle School!  Someone in Summerdale has been a "squeaky wheel!" After explaining how much our local school libraries need the books, Ms. Nichols offered to sell us the books at a deep discount, and whatever was left would still go to Summerdale (as they had promised.) In the end, over 1000 were purchased for our Libraries for a mere $40.  Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Teal, our Middle and High School Librarians are thrilled! The books were delivered on 2/21/08.  Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Williams at Gulf Shores High School will evaluate the books and decide which are appropriate for each school and grade level. At that point, the books will be distributed to the appropriate school.

We have also asked that for future book sales, the remainder of the books be donated to our Gulf Shores/Orange Beach schools.

If you would like to make a donation to our Libraries, or have ideas on how we can add books, please e-mail me at SwigerRep@yahoo.com.
