1/13/09- Approval of new Head Football Coach/AD-Mark Freeman!
In a special called
meeting of the Baldwin County Board of Education on 1/13/09, a position was
approved for the new AD/Head Coach for Gulf Shores High School. Mark
Freeman was chosen by Dr. Rosado and a unanimous Search Committee from among
four finalists. Coach Freeman comes from Bessemer Academy near Birmingham where
he won 4 state championships in the last five years there. He was the AD at
Bessemer Academy for eleven years and saw state championships in several other
sports in addition to football during his tenure. Coach Freeman was welcomed to
GSHS with a brief parent/player meeting on Thursday, Jan. 15 where he gave a
short speech and answered questions. His first official day on the job will be
Tuesday, Jan 20.

1/13/09-
Groundbreaking Ceremony, Gulf Shores High School Addition
Our students and
staff returned from the Christmas holidays to see the west side of Gulf Shores
High School fenced off and under construction!! Our new addition is well
under way. A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held at the school on 1/13/09 and
was well attended by Mayor Craft, Mayor Kennon, Jeff Silvers (OB City Council),
Phillip Harris (GS City Council), Tracy Roberts, BCBE President, Norm Moore
(Board Representative), Frank Trione (Board Representative), Dr. Pam Henson
(Director of Curriculum), Mr. Eddie Tyler (Ass't Superintendant), Dr. Faron
Hollinger, and many, many local citizens, teachers, and students. What a great
day for Gulf Shores. The new wing will hold 4 new science labs, a new band
room, a choral room, a pre-engineering program, and additional classrooms. Thank
you to everyone who joined us for this great event!
COMPUTER LAB IS COMPLETE AND WAS PROVIDED BY THE BALDWIN COUNTY BOARD OF
EDUCATION!
THANK YOU!!
11/29/08-
The plans for our new addition have been approved by the state and are ready to
go out for bid on Dec. 16th!
10/31/08- Light at the GSHS Practice Field!!
WE HAVE LIGHTS on our GSHS
practice field for the first time since Gulf Shores High School opened its
doors! In early October, in came to my attention that the practice field lights
did not work. They had been donated a few years ago by the City of Gulf Shores,
but were never hooked up to power. Our Dolphins were having a big season and we
needed the lights before daylight savings time!
We’d like to send out a BIG DOLPHIN
THANK YOU to some very special people who worked together to get this done!!!
Thank you to Our Gulf Shores city council who donated the light poles to Gulf
Shores High School two years ago! Jody Taylor and Steve Irwin at Baldwin
EMC who were very responsive when they received my call. The met me at the
field within a few days and installed the poles and laid the wire at no cost to
the schools. Ken and Dawn Gates, owners of Gates Builders were the first on the
scene when I asked for help. They volunteered their services and donated
the cost of the trencher and the labor for digging the trench. Gates’ project
manager, Scott Dishaw and Gates’ employees, Sam Johns and Richard Caulkerhekped
on the job. Thank you Dr. Rosado and Mr. Johnny Pfeifer at the Baldwin
County Schools’ Maintenance Division, who got our electrician out for the final
hook-up and inspection!
Because of our community’s efforts and quick response, our boys had lights to
practice by in just one week!

10/30/08- Clearing of Bus Parking Area
In
October, one of our bus drivers reported that the area where the buses park had
become overgrown with bushes and weeds, and therefore had attracted bugs,
snakes, etc. to the area. The drivers were nervous about walking through the
area to enter their buses. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Fountain, and I contacted
the City of Gulf Shores (Mr. Ernie Smith). In response to our request, the
Streets and Maintenance Division cleared the area and has spoken to Mr. Fountain
about clearing the area in the Spring and laying limestone to correct the
problem for good. THANK YOU!!
September, 2008- Delivery of new Dumpster to
GSHS Field House
There
have been previous concerns about trash and debris around the field house. In
speaking to one our custodians, it came to light that there were difficulties
keeping the area clean due to the distance of the field house from school's only
dumpster (behind the band room). A second dumpster was badly needed at the field
house location. It seemed that the dumpster had been requested several
times before to no avail. Dr. Rosado and I teamed up on this issue in September
and our dumpster was delivered!
9/11/08- Local involvement on the Design and
Planning of our GSHS addition
With
Dr. Rosado included in all design phases of our new addition, we can be rest
assured we will have a building we can all be proud of!
Thank you Dr. Rosado and Mr. Tyler!
8/08- Development of District 5
Informational website
This
website was developed and created in an attempt to keep the communities informed
and involved in our children's education. Communication was named as a top
priority throughout our campaign, hence the creation of the website. Here
you will find weekly updates (when available) on school happenings, County Board
meetings, and local information and support efforts. If there is additional
information that you would like to see included on this site, please contact me.
8/11/08--Traffic Flow Change at Intersection of
15th St. and E. 2nd St.
In a
joint effort with the City of Gulf Shores and our schools, we managed to get the
afternoon traffic flow changed in an effort to make this formerly dangerous
intersection safer for our students, our teachers, and our parents. In
addition, we now have a Gulf Shores Police Officer at this intersection in the
afternoons to alleviate congestion and potential accidents.
Thank you to Mayor Billy Duke, Chief Bourne, and
the many teachers who help direct our afternoon carpool lines.
